The Unseen Four Years

Everyone hears it on the first day of university: “These are the best years of your life.” Parents, seniors, even movies show nonstop parties and lifelong friends. It sounds comforting, but for many students, it doesn’t match reality. When stress, loneliness, or a fail grade is taken, that line makes you feel like you are not good enough. University has good moments, but calling the entire four years “the best” creates the wrong expectation.

This idea comes from how people remember the past. Adults look back on university through nostalgia. Fun trips are remembered, while late night assignments and money worries fade. Students who felt lost or alone are rarely heard.

For most of the students, university is confusing. At nineteen to twenty-two, identity and career direction are often unclear. Some realize they chose the wrong course. Friend groups fall apart leaving only memories or maybe lessons. Moreover, it’s often the first-time managing finances alone. Food, transport, internet, and social life all should be managed with a limited amount of money.  While realising the Value of money, frequent reliance on parents for living expenses evoke guilt within students.

In addition, Grades, internships, and questions like “what after degree?” turn struggles into pressure. While fulfilling expectations, you’re expected to enjoy university, build a career, and find yourself, all at once.

An alternative way to see university is to call it the “growth years.” Failure, learning, and changes in direction are often seen. It is also the “first taste of freedom” years after decades of living a pampered life. Choices are made without parents, and mistakes become lessons. Additionally, Skills, habits, and friendships are built. Of course, some moments like a 2 a.m. hostel cooking, a first A grade, or a department trip stand out. That does not mean every day will feel like that.

Therefore, University is not the best years of your life. Those are the years that shaped an individual who was once nothing. The process is always not easy and feels the best as said yet, it is one great experience that is necessary for your life.
